NQ Algae Eating Shrimp (Caridina longirostris) (Live Shrimp)

North Queensland Algae Eating Shrimp are active freshwater shrimp valued for their natural algae-grazing and scavenging behaviour. They spend much of their time exploring aquarium surfaces, plants, rocks, and décor in search of algae, biofilm, and leftover food, making them a useful addition to established freshwater aquariums. Common names: North Queensland Algae Eating Shrimp, NQ Algae Shrimp, NQ Shrimp Scientific name: Caridina sp. NQ (often identified in the aquarium trade as Caridina longirostris) Approximate size: Up to 2–3 cm (0.8–1.2 in) Temperament: Peaceful freshwater shrimp Recommended tank size: 20 L (5 US gal) or larger Diet: Primarily algae and biofilm, supplemented with shrimp foods, blanched vegetables, and other suitable foods. Known as an active algae grazer. Origin: North Queensland, Australia Basic care information: Keep in clean, stable freshwater around 20–28°C (68–82°F) with a pH of approximately 6.5–7.5. Provide plants, rocks, wood, and other surfaces for grazing and shelter. Keep in groups when possible and avoid copper-based medications. They are peaceful and suitable for planted community aquariums with small, non-aggressive tank mates.
