Antique, Victorian ruby double snake ring

Provenance Original to c.1887, this incredible serpent ring is an exceptional example of its type. Two snake heads entwined around one another, carved in rich 18ct yellow gold, their bodies coil around the finger to form the band. Serpent rings were particularly popular during the Victorian period, Queen Victoria's engagement ring was even an emerald-set snake ring. This example is particularly fine, each snake head is set with four natural rubies, eight in total. Each has been perfectly matched in colour, boasting a gorgeous raspberry red colour with that striking pink glow for which rubies are recognised by. During the Victorian era, both serpents and rubies symbolised wisdom, so their pairing here is particularly apt. Each snake head holds the tail of the other in its mouth, this symbol is known as the Ouroboros and roots back to antiquity. Here, the symbolism is clear. The two entwined snakes symbolise everlasting love, passion and wisdom.
