Morphology/Growth Habits: This perennial is known for its large, complex, purple-blue flowers with touches of white and yellow, and dark veins. Forms clumps of blue-green, bladelike leaves and bluish-purple flowering stalks with bold purple veining. Spreads primarily by rhizomes. Height: 2 ft. Light: Full Sun-Part Shade Moisture: Medium-Wet Bloom color: Purple/blue Bloom time: May-June Habitat/Best Environments: This wildflower is found growing in marshes, swamps, and wet meadows. As such, it grows best in moist, rich soil. While it can tolerate some shade, it prefers full sun. Best grouped in sunny areas of ponds or water gardens. It can also tolerate brackish water and flooding! This is a great option for a rain garden. Ecological relationships: Attracts hummingbirds and many pollinators! Larval host for 13 species of Lepidoptera (butterflies/moths/skippers). Roots and sap are mildly toxic to humans and can cause light skin irritation. If ingested it can cause more serious symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and fever.
