Bouteloua dactyloides (Buffalo Grass) Seed
Bouteloua dactyloides (buffalograss) is a low-growing, warm-season grass for a sunny alternative lawn. Once established, it tolerates drought and generally needs less mowing and supplemental water than conventional cool-season turf. It spreads by short aboveground runners to form a soft, fine-textured cover. Choose your cultivar ‘Bowie’: A seeded turf cultivar released in 2001, with medium-green color, fine leaves, and good turf density. Choose it for a classic buffalograss lawn appearance. ‘Sundancer’: A newer seeded turf cultivar selected for improved color, cover, density, and establishment. Choose it when faster establishment and a fuller turf appearance are priorities. Site and season: Best in full sun on a well-prepared, weed-free site. Seed when soil is warm, and water through establishment. As a warm-season grass, it greens up later in spring and turns straw-colored in winter. These named turf cultivars are suited to lawn alternatives; check provenance requirements before using them in local-ecotype prairie restoration. Seed minimum: $30 of Buffalo Grass seed per order. You can combine ‘Bowie’ and ‘Sundancer’ options to reach the minimum. For example, two 0.5 lb packages of ‘Bowie’ total $35.72. Choose a 0.5 or 1 lb PLS quantity. PLS reflects viable seed after purity and germination are accounted for. Availability is subject to confirmation.
