Labplas Sani-Stick Sterile Sampling Sponges with Handle Labplas Sani-Stick kits are sterile surface sampling sponges mounted on a rigid handle, for vigorous swabbing and for reaching drains, corners, equipment interiors and other hard-to-reach areas. When you've finished sampling, a quick-release clip drops the sponge into the bag without your hand touching it. Each kit comes in a 6 × 10.5 in TWIRL'EM sampling bag with a writing area and a twist-wire closure. This page covers 13 kits, all packed 100 per case. Cellulose sponges come pre-moistened with Buffered Peptone Water (BPW), Dey-Engley Neutralizing Broth (DE), Letheen Broth (LT) or Neutralizing Buffer (NE), with or without a pair of sterile gloves. Polyurethane sponges come dry or pre-moistened with the same four media, without gloves. They're used in food and beverage QA/QC, food processing plants, environmental labs and research laboratories. Labplas Sani-Stick kits are available in Canada from Cambridge Environmental Products with CAD pricing and Canadian purchasing support. Ideal For Food processing plants: environmental monitoring of drains, equipment frames, conveyors and other hard-to-reach areas Listeria and Salmonella monitoring programs where sampling needs firm scrubbing pressure Sanitation verification on sanitized surfaces, using a neutralizing broth Sampling crews who want sterile gloves packed with each kit Sampling teams who want to keep hands away from the sponge during sampling and transfer Research laboratories, universities and colleges Why Choose Sani-Stick Kits? Rigid handle for vigorous, hands-off sampling The green polypropylene handle is rigid, so you can press and scrub firmly to pick up organisms from crevices and biofilm-prone areas without the handle bending. A finger stop keeps your hand from sliding toward the sponge, and ribbed sleeves give grip when reaching into restricted spaces. Contactless sponge release After sampling, the quick-release clip drops the sponge into the bag without your hand touching it. That reduces the risk of cross-contamination. Labplas notes the clip also keeps plastic from the handle out of the bag, which matters if the sample goes into a homogenizer (stomacher). Two sponge materials Cellulose (yellow) has many small pores and suits smooth surfaces such as stainless steel, plastic and glass. Polyurethane (white) is a stiffer, hydrophilic foam that releases liquid more easily and suits rougher surfaces. Labplas notes that some sampling tests require polyurethane. Optional sterile gloves (cellulose kits) The "with gloves" kits (KSS-67315 codes) include a pair of sterile blue polyethylene gloves. Labplas packs them in individual pairs, irradiates them and folds them to keep them sterile while you put them on. Neutralizing options for sanitized surfaces Sanitizer residue picked up by the sponge can keep killing organisms on the way to the lab, which can give false negatives. DE, LT and NE are neutralizing media; BPW is non-neutralizing. The dry polyurethane kit (KSS-67910) lets you add your own diluent. Sterilized by irradiation Labplas sterilizes Sani-Sponge kits by irradiation, with a sterility assurance level (SAL) of 10⁻³ established according to ISO 11137. The kits are also listed as DNase-free, RNase-free and non-pyrogenic (endotoxin limit 2.15 EU/device). The sponge is free from biocides, so it won't kill organisms in the sample before testing. Bag, sponge and closure in one kit The sponge comes inside a TWIRL'EM sampling bag with a writing area. After sampling, the sponge goes back in the bag, and you twirl the bag by its 2 round wires and fold them over to seal it. The same bag goes to the lab, and Labplas lists the bags as compatible with incubators and homogenizers (stomachers). Food-contact compliant materials Labplas states the bag materials meet FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU Regulation No 10/2011 for food contact. Labplas also notes the kits can be used as part of a CFIA Preventive Control Plan (PCP) and HACCP program. That is not a CFIA approval of the product itself. Rough or uneven surfaces, or a method that specifies polyurethane: polyurethane. Want sterile gloves packed with each kit? Choose cellulose + gloves (KSS-67315 codes). Want to add your own diluent, or need room-temperature storage and a longer shelf life? Choose the dry polyurethane kit (KSS-67910). Which Broth Should I Choose? Choose the medium your lab method specifies. If you're choosing for your own program, start from the sanitizers used in your facility. Labplas lists what each solution neutralizes: Broth Neutralizes (per Labplas) pH Shelf Life Storage DE – Dey-Engley Neutralizing Broth Glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde, chlorine/bromine/iodine, quaternary ammonium compounds, chlorhexidine, phenols, alcohol, peroxides, acetic and lactic acids 7.6 ± 0.2 15 months 2–8 °C LT – Letheen Broth Formaldehyde, quaternary ammonium compounds, chlorhexidine, phenols, alcohol 7.0 ± 0.2 15 months 2–8 °C NE – Neutralizing Buffer Glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde, chlorine/bromine/iodine, quaternary ammonium compounds 7.2 ± 0.2 24 months 2–25 °C BPW – Buffered Peptone Water Acetic and lactic acids only (non-neutralizing for other sanitizers) 7.2 ± 0.2 24 months 2–8 °C Dey-Engley (DE): the broadest coverage of the four. A good default where several sanitizer types are used, or where peroxide or acid sanitizers are used. Letheen (LT): covers quats, phenols, chlorhexidine and alcohol, but not chlorine, iodine or peroxides. Neutralizing Buffer (NE): covers chlorine-type and quat sanitizers. Labplas notes it keeps organisms viable without promoting growth, which suits quantitative (count) analysis. It also has the widest storage range. BPW: a non-selective pre-enrichment medium that helps injured bacteria recover. Labplas lists it for carcasses and surfaces. Use it where your method calls for BPW, or where sanitizer residue isn't a concern. Neutralizer information is from Labplas's neutralizing solutions guide; pH, shelf life and storage are from the product data sheets. Always follow your lab method, and confirm neutralizer effectiveness against the sanitizers and concentrations used in your facility. Dry kit (KSS-67910): 5-year shelf life, stored in a dry place at room temperature. Common Applications Application How These Kits Help Drain and floor sampling Rigid handle reaches into drains and along floor junctions without hand contact. Equipment environmental monitoring Scrub frames, conveyors, crevices and other harbourage points firmly. Sanitation verification Neutralizing media help keep sanitizer residues from affecting results. Molecular testing Labplas lists the kits as DNase-free and RNase-free. The broth volume in each sponge isn't published. Contact Cambridge if you need it. How to Use Tear off the top of the bag along the laser-scored line and open it. Put on clean or sterile gloves, then take out the Sani-Stick by the handle. Don't touch the sponge. For the dry kit (KSS-67910), moisten the sponge with your method's diluent or neutralizer. Swab the surface following your sampling procedure, using firm pressure. Hold the sponge over the open bag and use the quick-release clip to drop it in. Twirl the bag by the wire ends to close it, fold the wires over to lock, and record the sample details in the writing area. Transport to the lab under the conditions your method requires. Sampling areas, transport temperatures and holding times come from your lab method or customer requirements, not from the kit. Follow your own procedure. Selection & Handling Notes Refrigerate on receipt. Pre-moistened BPW, DE and LT kits are stored at 2–8 °C. NE kits can be kept at 2–25 °C, and the dry kit at room temperature. Check the expiry date. DE and LT have a 15-month lifespan, so order quantities you'll use before they expire. Match the broth to your sanitizer. A non-neutralizing medium (BPW) on a sanitized surface can lead to false negatives. Don't open until use. Sterility applies to the unopened kit. Discard any kit with a damaged bag or leaking medium. Single use: use each kit once. Don't reuse them.
