Kangra Paintings on Love | M. S. Randhawa | 1994 Illustrated Edition

Kangra Paintings on Love by M. S. Randhawa is an illustrated study of the romantic themes and visual poetry of Kangra painting, one of the celebrated traditions of Pahari miniature art from the Himalayan foothills. Published in 1994 by the Publications Division, Government of India, this hardcover edition explores the relationship between classical Hindi poetry and the delicate visual language of Kangra paintings. The book examines themes such as the Nayaka-Nayika tradition, depicting lovers and their emotional worlds, and Baramasa, in which the changing seasons are associated with human feelings and experiences. It also includes material relating to Keshav Das’s Rasikapriya, a poetic work that inspired artists working within this tradition. Through colour plates and black-and-white illustrations, the volume presents the refined compositions, expressive gestures, landscapes, trees, flowers and seasonal settings characteristic of Kangra painting. These works bring together literary imagination, romantic sentiment and the observation of nature, offering insight into the artistic conventions of the Pahari miniature tradition. For collectors, researchers, art historians and readers interested in Indian miniature painting, this book is a valuable reference on the artistic heritage of the Kangra region. This 1994 hardcover edition with its dust jacket is in excellent condition, making it a welcome addition to a library devoted to Indian art, classical poetry and traditional painting.
