Apparently there are 5,000 different euphemisms worldwide for "menstrual period"-- people are just so clever. How do periods work, anyway? Once a month your uterus cleans itself out, sending blood through your vagina into the outside world. Menstrual periods arrive around age 9 to 14. This is a big change but it’s a perfectly normal part of growing up. If you want more info on how periods work, read up on our blog! Or just get this poster. What is ovulation? The two ovaries take turns releasing eggs down the fallopian tubes for possible fertilization in the uterus. Ovulation begins in your head! Hormones are released from glands within the brain. These travel through the bloodstream to the ovary. As they grow, several egg follicles produce estrogen. This causes the uterine lining to thicken with more blood vessels in preparation for the egg’s release from the ovary. If you need more period gifts, the Periodic Table of Your Period is also available as a shower curtain, bag, blanket, wall art and other cool gear in our Threadless shop!
