Wolf Cichlid (Parachromis dovii) The Wolf Cichlid is found from the Aguan River in Honduras to the Moín River in Costa Rica, along the Atlantic slope of Central America, and from the Yeguare River in Honduras to the Bebedero River in Costa Rica on the Pacific slope. Typically, it inhabits lakes, but it also flourishes in the lower and middle river valleys. This species, which primarily feeds on fish, is one of the largest among cichlids and is best suited for very large home aquariums or public aquaria. If you plan to keep it in a home aquarium, it should be quite spacious and equipped with powerful, oversized filtration. The substrate should be soft sand, as these fish tend to be messy eaters, making it easier to maintain cleanliness compared to gravel; alternatively, a bare-bottom setup is also effective and easy to care for. These fish need ample swimming space, but they will appreciate some decorations like large pieces of bogwood and sturdy Anubias sp. or Java Fern plants growing on the wood. While rockwork can be included, ensure it is stable since these fish can easily rearrange their environment; it might be wise to secure the rocks together with aquarium silicone. Wolf Cichlids are heavy feeders that generate a significant amount of waste, necessitating consistently excellent water conditions. Therefore, strong filtration and well-oxygenated water are crucial. A regular schedule of partial water changes is vital, as this riverine species cannot tolerate high nitrate levels. You can use several large canister filters, but sump filtration might be a better option since it allows you to keep equipment like heaters in the sump, protecting them from damage in the main tank. The Wolf Cichlid is a fierce predator and will consume anything that fits in its mouth, so it’s important to select tankmates with care. They are highly territorial and should ideally be kept alone or as a known mated pair. Avoid housing more than one male in the same tank.
