Our non-woven polypropylene landscape fabric is a heavy-duty ground cover designed to block weeds at the source while keeping your soil healthy and accessible to water, air, and nutrients. Made from thermally bonded polypropylene fibres, it delivers a dense, felt-like barrier that is flexible enough to cut and shape around any garden layout. At 4.2 oz/yd², it is built for long-term installations where reliable weed suppression is the priority. Where to use It Under gravel and decorative stone: The most common use for non-woven fabric. Its density provides excellent stability, preventing stones from sinking into the soil over time while blocking weed growth from below. Under pavers and hardscaping: Install it beneath stone pavers, stepping stones, or brick paths as a separation layer that resists shifting and keeps the surface level over time. Shrub and tree beds: Lay it around established trees and shrubs for long-term, low-maintenance weed control in areas that will not be replanted frequently. Slopes and erosion-prone areas: The bonded fibre structure holds soil in place on inclines and exposed areas, reducing surface runoff and erosion during heavy rainfall. Driveways and pathways: Use it as a base layer under gravel driveways or garden paths to stabilise the surface and prevent weed emergence over the long term. Benefits for your plants and soil Effective weed suppression: The dense, bonded structure blocks sunlight from reaching the soil surface, preventing weed seeds from germinating without the use of herbicides or chemicals. Moisture retention: By reducing direct sun exposure to the soil, the fabric slows evaporation and helps maintain consistent moisture levels at the root zone between waterings. Water and nutrient permeability: Despite its density, the fabric remains permeable. Rain and irrigation pass through to the soil below, ensuring plant roots continue to receive water and nutrients. Soil stability: The fabric cushions the soil from the impact of heavy rain, reducing compaction and protecting soil structure for healthier root development. Stone and mulch containment: When used under gravel or decorative rock, the fabric keeps the surface material from mixing with the soil below, preserving the appearance of the installation over time. Material This fabric is manufactured from non woven polypropylene fibres bonded together through a thermal process, creating a uniform, felt-like sheet without any woven structure. This construction method gives non-woven PP fabric a distinct set of properties: Uniform density: Because the fibres are bonded rather than woven, the fabric has no gaps or open weave points. This creates a more consistent barrier against light and weed penetration across the entire surface. Flexibility: The felt-like texture makes the fabric easy to cut with scissors or a utility knife and simple to shape around curves, beds, and obstacles. UV stabilisation: UV inhibitors are incorporated into the polypropylene fibres, protecting the fabric from sun-related degradation and extending its outdoor service life. Rot and mildew resistance: Polypropylene does not absorb moisture and will not rot, mildew, or degrade from prolonged soil contact. Chemical resistance: The fabric is inert to commonly encountered soil chemicals, fertilisers, and biological organisms, maintaining its integrity in demanding outdoor conditions. Weight: At 4.2 oz/yd² (142 g/m²), this is a heavy-duty grade fabric suited to long-term permanent installations. Best use tip Non-woven landscape fabric is the preferred choice for installations under gravel, stone, and hardscaping where the fabric will remain undisturbed for several years. For vegetable beds or areas that require regular replanting, our woven weed barrier landscape fabric is the more practical option. Lifespan and reuse Non-woven polypropylene fabric is a long-term solution rather than a seasonal one. When covered with at least 2 to 3 inches of gravel or mulch (which shields it from UV exposure), it can remain effective for many years. Exposed installations have a shorter lifespan, typically 3 to 5 years depending on sun intensity and climate. Unlike lighter consumer-grade non-woven fabrics, the 4.2 oz/yd² weight of this fabric resists tearing during installation and holds up under the weight of stone and gravel without compressing or clogging over time. It is not typically removed and reused between seasons in the way a lighter woven fabric might be, as it is designed for permanent or semi-permanent ground installations. Installation note Clear all existing weeds before laying the fabric. Overlap edges by at least 6 inches and secure with landscape staples every 2 to 4 feet. Cover with your chosen surface material promptly after installation to protect the fabric from UV exposure and extend its service life.
