Raku refers to a special pottery firing process in which the pendants are removed from a hot kiln and quickly placed in a metal container filled with shredded paper, sawdust, leaves, or any other flammable material. The combustible materials burst into flames and are allowed to burn briefly before a lid is placed over the container. As the oxygen burns up around the pendants, the glazes reduce and transform into a metallic state resulting in wonderful flashes of color. The smoke from the fire pushes into cracks and blackens unglazes sections of the pottery. You never know exactly how the fire, smoke, and glaze will interact and so it's a bit of a surprise every time. The Forged in Fire necklace places one of these incredible raku pendants front and center. You'll tie your cords directly to the pendant and immediately begin a beaded braid that smoothly shifts from one color to another as you make your way to the back of the necklace. The star of each Forged in Fire necklace is a collectable hand-made raku pendant by a local Tucson artist. Please keep in mind that because these pendants are handmade and raku is a highly unpredictable firing technique, your pendant will be similar to, but not exactly the same as the one shown in the photo.
