Danish Studio Stoneware Vase in the Manner of Tatsuzo Shimaoka, 1970s

Sculptural Danish studio stoneware vase produced during the 1970s, strongly influenced by Japanese mingei ceramics and the work of Tatsuzo Shimaoka. The vase features a highly architectural rectangular form with a narrow central neck and richly textured glaze in earthy brown, cream and bronze tones. The tactile surface and organic glazing effects create a strong brutalist presence while retaining a refined handcrafted character. The piece reflects the important dialogue between Scandinavian and Japanese ceramic traditions during the 1960s and 1970s, when many Danish studio potters explored more organic firing techniques, textured surfaces and asymmetrical forms inspired by Japanese folk pottery.
