Painted Surfaces on fired clay sculpture, with Tip Toland, August 15 and 16 $250
Painted Surfaces on fired clay sculpture, with Tip Toland Registrations for this workshop will begin at 8 am on May 5. Limited to 15 students. 9am-4pm, each day, with an hour for lunch. Bring a lunch. "Tip Toland's work astounds the viewer, laying bare unfiltered emotion and human frailties. This remarkable artist has forged an independent path while drawing from longstanding traditions of sculpture. Her investment in ceramics is both deep and profound, yet can also be seen as incidental to the meaning of her work. Her practice stands apart from other approaches to sculpture or ceramics, untethered to current conventions or regionalist leanings." Sequoia Miller, from his 2022 introduction to the a book about the life and work of ceramic artist Tip Toland. This is a class to learn how Tip creates her flesh-like surfaces. Day 1 will focus on mixing and applying wet house paint to the sculptures. Day 2, we’ll finish with dry pastel, detailing the eyes, fixative, and wax. All materials for the finishes will be provided. Further instructions will be provided for those that register. Students need to bring a previously bisque fired sculpture and a previously bisque fired mask to this workshop.
