Walkin' in the Sand: Ten Girl Groups of the Sixties (1958–1964)
Also in this series: Sound of Confusion (1966–1986) · Kosmische Musik (1969–1976) Ten groups, six years, from The Chantels in 1958 to The Shangri-Las in 1964, in order of breakthrough single. Harmony, heartbreak and handclaps passed down the line, from the Bronx to Brooklyn, Passaic to Detroit, Inkster to Queens. The Crystals, The Ronettes, The Supremes and The Shangri-Las get top billing. The Chantels drew the blueprint, the Shirelles and the Cookies sang the songs of the Brill Building, the Marvelettes gave Motown its first No. 1, and Martha and the Vandellas brought the heat. Phil Spector built his wall of sound around the Crystals and the Ronettes, and the Shangri-Las closed the era with the darkness punk would later inherit. The title comes from the Shangri-Las' first hit, 'Remember (Walkin' in the Sand)', a 1964 Top 5 single written by George "Shadow" Morton. A typographic print in the style of an old gig bill.
