Offered is a set of vintage brass eagle bookends. Each bookend depicts a wingspread eagle clutching a bundle of arrows in its left talon and an olive branch in the right talon. When set against books, the base of the bookends slips underneath and the eagles appear to be freestanding, without additional backboards for support. This set of bookends was produced by the American company Baldwin Brass. The eagle motif in décor and folk art has been widely used throughout our nation's history, most notably as part of our Great Seal. The founders of the United States were fond of comparing their new republic with the Roman Republic, in which eagle imagery, usually the golden eagle, was prominent. On June 20, 1782, the Continental Congress adopted the design for the Great Seal of the United States depicting a bald eagle grasping 13 arrows and an olive branch with its talons. CONDITION: Near fine condition. Brass is bright, with a a few minor scratches and scuffs as to be expected with age and use. Felted back base. Set of two bookends. Dimensions: 5 1/4" H x 5 1/2" W x 4 1/4" D (each). Accompanied by our company's letter of authenticity.
