3. Full Description Kaleidoscope Favia, Favia sp., is a colorful colonial stony coral prized for its fleshy polyps, pronounced skeletal ridges, and dramatic contrasting coloration. This specimen displays deep burgundy-red to crimson tissue accented by vivid fluorescent yellow-green highlights along the raised ridges, with bright yellow centers surrounded by red and pale contrasting tissue. Each corallite forms a distinct circular to irregular pattern, creating a highly textured colony with layers of red, green, yellow, and subtle lavender tones. The fluorescent yellow-green highlights appearing along portions of the skeletal ridges give the colony additional depth and help create the multicolor “Kaleidoscope” appearance reflected in its name. Corals traditionally sold in the aquarium trade as Favia contain symbiotic photosynthetic dinoflagellates that provide much of their nutritional energy. Their fleshy polyps can also capture plankton and appropriately sized meaty foods. Because species-level identification of these corals generally requires detailed skeletal examination and coral taxonomy has undergone considerable revision, Favia sp. is used here as the most appropriate trade-level scientific designation for this specimen. Care Guide: Scientific Name: Favia sp. Care Level: Moderate Lighting: Low to Moderate Water Flow: Low to Moderate, indirect and variable flow Placement: Lower to middle areas of the aquarium depending on lighting intensity Temperament: Aggressive; provide adequate space from neighboring corals Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic; may also benefit from occasional targeted feeding with appropriately sized planktonic or finely chopped marine foods Growth Form: Massive to encrusting colonial growth with fleshy polyps and pronounced skeletal ridges Water Parameters: Maintain stable reef aquarium temperature and salinity along with consistent alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium. Keep nitrate and phosphate measurable and reasonably stable rather than excessively low. Special Considerations: Avoid strong direct flow that can prevent normal tissue expansion. Gradually acclimate the coral to brighter lighting. Allow generous space from neighboring corals because Favia-type corals can extend sweeper tentacles beyond the visible colony margin, especially after lights-out.
