Anni Albers : A Life - Nicholas Fox Weber

Anni Albers : A Life – Nicholas Fox Weber The first major biography of Anni Albers explores the life, work, and enduring influence of one of modernism's most innovative creative figures. “Brilliant anecdotes... The first comprehensive biography of this fascinating artist, an indelible figure of not just textile art but modernism itself.” — Grace Edquist, Vogue Anni Albers (1899–1994) transformed the way we think about textiles, elevating weaving from a functional craft to a major artistic discipline. A pioneering designer, writer, printmaker, and educator, she became one of the most influential figures associated with the Bauhaus and twentieth-century modernism. Drawing on extensive archival research and decades of personal conversations with Albers, Nicholas Fox Weber offers an intimate and richly detailed portrait of her life and work. From her early years in Berlin and formative experiences at the Bauhaus to her influential teaching at Black Mountain College and later life in Connecticut, this biography traces the development of a singular creative vision that continues to resonate across art, architecture, and design. Weber also illuminates Albers's relationships with leading cultural figures of the twentieth century, including Josef Albers, Walter Gropius, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, John Cage, and Buckminster Fuller. Bringing together themes of materiality, experimentation, and modernist thinking, this engaging account reveals why Anni Albers remains a vital reference point for architects, designers, artists, and anyone interested in the intersections of craft and modern culture. An essential addition to the library of anyone interested in Bauhaus design, modernism, architecture, textiles, and visual culture.
