#4091 Walnut Board/ with Cane Handled Knife/ Carl Auböck II, 1950s
Description: A walnut board with cane handled knife, designed by Carl Auböck II during the 1950s. Variously described as a steak cutting board or cheese board, this uniquely shaped walnut board came out of the prestigious Werkstatte Carl Auböck during the 1950s. Substantially proportioned, wonderfully tactile, and, above all, perfectly functional, this design is a wonderful example of the workshop's distinctive design expression. The asymmetrical shape of the board might be a subtle hint at its use; a playful, semi-abstract allusion to a leg of ham, or perhaps just a useful shape for a handled board. The stainless steel knife, which tucks neatly into a leather holder secured by tiny brass tacks, is stamped both "Auböck" and with the stamp of Austrain cutlery manufacturer, Amboss (Neuzeughammer Ambosswerk), a name seen often in Auböck designs. The final image on this page shows this design photographed in a catalogue of Auböck designs that was started in 1948. It was around this time that the workshop started to produce more photographs of their designs for the overseas market, particularly US department stores. The set is in excellent vintage condition and has a small brass detail at the back from which the board can be hung. We've displayed the board on a new-cast Auböck hook. All the hooks have been made in the same workshop since the early 20th century, using the same molds and brass casting methods. Discover the full range here.
