The idea: not to repel, but to make sure the spirits simply don't want to come back. Later it was considered one of the most powerful protective herbs against devils and witches, and was hung in bunches in stables and homes. Today it mainly makes fried potatoes, stews and pizza happy. Rosemary – Branches above the front door were said to keep evil spirits and witches away; placed under a pillow, they were meant to protect against nightmares. In the Middle Ages, rosemary was burned in sickrooms, and at funerals it was laid on graves as a sign of remembrance. In your kitchen it's more likely to remind you of roast potatoes and focaccia. Thyme – Its powerful, cleansing aroma was said to free rooms from negative energies. The Greeks burned it in their temples. According to tradition, ladies in the Middle Ages sent their knights off to battle with sprigs of thyme or embroidered thyme motifs – as a symbol of bravery and courage. Fortunately, a good tomato sauce requires far less courage. Chives – Garlic's little sibling. Same family, same defence compounds, just in the light version. They probably won't impress a full-grown vampire much, but for grumpy neighbourhood ghosts they should do the trick.
