Silene virginica (Fire Pink)

Silene virginica, commonly known as Fire Pink or Scarlet Catchfly, is a striking native wildflower belonging to the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae). It is widely celebrated for its brilliant, star-shaped crimson flowers that serve as a crucial early-season nectar source for Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. This is a short-lived perennial (typically lives 2 to 3 years, but easily self-seeds), and grows 1-2' tall with weak, slightly reclining stems Fire Pink blooms late spring to early summer (May to July). It naturally thrives on rocky slopes, open dry woods, forest margins, and cliffs. Interestingly, its common name "Fire Pink" partly comes from its ability to withstand and quickly respawn after wildfires. It is a protected or endangered species in several states, including Florida, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The "Catchfly" Defense Mechanism: The stems and flower bases are covered in short, sticky glandular hairs. This feature functions as an insect trap (hence the name "Catchfly"). It prevents ants and non-pollinating crawling insects from stealing nectar without actually pollinating the plant. While it dissolves the ensnared bugs to keep its stems clean, it is not truly carnivorous as it does not absorb nutrients from them. Avoid heavy, deep shade and harsh afternoon sun. It prefers well-drained, dry to medium-moist, sandy, or rocky soil. It actually prefers poor, acidic, nutrient-deficient soils.
