THE WATCH The small black lines running through the hour markers do a surprising amount of work on this Lord Matic. Against the softly radiating silver dial they give every hour a crisp edge, while the double marker at twelve keeps the whole arrangement beautifully balanced. Follow that detail into the close rows of the bracelet and there is a lovely sense of care in a watch made for ordinary days. At the turn of the 1970s, Seiko was making enormous progress in quartz, but its mechanical watches were not standing still. Lord Matic occupied an appealing place in that world: properly considered casework and automatic engineering without the formality of a King Seiko or the expense of Grand Seiko. The 5606-7070 shows how much design Seiko could put into an everyday watch without making it complicated to wear. A BIT OF TRIVIA In August 1970, while this Lord Matic was being made, Seiko was keeping time on a rather grander scale at Expo ’70 in Osaka. The company installed an extraordinary master clock that used radio signals to synchronise 110 clocks across 50 locations throughout the exhibition. It's a wonderful contrast: a beautifully traditional mechanical watch on someone's wrist, while elsewhere in Japan, Seiko was keeping an entire World's Fair ticking together. OUR THOUGHTS We have handled quite a few 5606-7070s, and it is the quieter details that keep bringing us back. This one has that easy silver dial, but it is the neat dark accents and the many fine bracelet links that make the difference for us. It has the look of a watch that can settle naturally into everyday life, yet there is enough thoughtful design here to give you something new to notice every time it catches the light.
