Helanthium Vesuvius (Twisted Chain Sword)
🌿 Helanthium bolivianum 'Vesuvius' – Twisted Chain Sword with Spiraling Elegance Helanthium bolivianum 'Vesuvius', formerly known as Echinodorus 'Vesuvius', is a captivating sword plant cultivar selected from a mutation of H. bolivianum 'Angustifolius' at the renowned Oriental nursery in Singapore. Since its commercial introduction in 2006, this unique species has become a standout favorite for its eye-catching spiral leaves and elegant rosette structure. Known by hobbyists as the “Corkscrew Sword,” it brings motion, texture, and contrast to aquascapes. At Aquarium Plants Factory, we grow this plant in its emersed form. Emersed leaves are broader, shorter, and often less twisted—but once submerged in an aquarium, the transformation begins: long, narrow (approximately 4 mm wide), tightly spiraled leaves emerge in a lush rosette, reaching up to 25 cm in height in aquariums. These linear, ribbon-like leaves give a refined, Vallisneria-like appearance with a twist—literally. 🌟 Key Features Scientific Name: Helanthium bolivianum 'Vesuvius' Common Names: Twisted Chain Sword, Corkscrew Sword Leaf Shape: Narrow, spiraling (submerged); broader, straighter (emersed) Leaf Color: Fresh medium to dark green; semi-transparent Growth Form: Rosette with runners (chain sword) Max Height: Typically 20–25 cm submerged Visual Comparison: Resembles Vallisneria but with tightly twisted leaves 🌱 Growth & Propagation Growth Rate: Moderate; forms runners with daughter plants Light Requirement: Moderate to high CO₂ Requirement: Recommended but not essential below pH 7.5 Nutrient Substrate: Required (fine gravel, sand, or aquasoil) Fertilization: Needs full macro + micro nutrients in substrate and/or water column Can Be Grown Emersed: Yes 🪴 What You’ll Receive Enhance your aquarium with our fresh, high-quality plants, available in convenient formats: Loose Bare-Root Plants: Includes approximately 1–2 loose, bare-root plants, providing flexibility in planting and arrangement.
