Avamys is a steroid (corticosteroid) nasal spray. Its active ingredient, fluticasone furoate, has an anti-inflammatory action inside the nose. Used once a day, it calms the inflammation that allergens such as pollen, house dust mite or pet dander trigger, easing nasal allergy symptoms over time. What it treats Avamys is used to relieve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis — both seasonal (hay fever) and perennial (year-round) forms. Because it works by reducing inflammation, it is most effective when used every day through the period you have symptoms, rather than only when they flare. Yes. Avamys (fluticasone furoate) is a prescription-only medicine in the UK — you cannot buy it over the counter. Avamys contains fluticasone furoate, which is licensed in the UK as a prescription-only medicine. The over-the-counter fluticasone sprays (such as Flixonase and Pirinase) contain a different molecule, fluticasone propionate. They are related but not the same, and are licensed differently. How long does Avamys take to work? Some people notice an effect as early as 8 to 24 hours after the first dose, but it is not an instant treatment. It can take several days of regular daily use — and up to about two weeks — to reach full benefit. Use it every day for the period you need it. What are the side effects of Avamys? The most common side effect is nosebleeds, usually mild and more likely with use beyond about six weeks. Nasal soreness and headache can also occur. Shake gently, prime it if it is new or unused for 30 days, then spray into the nose once a day as directed.
