Acer platanoides ‘Crimson King’

Acer platanoides ‘Crimson King’, commonly known as Norway Maple ‘Crimson King’, is a vigorous medium-sized ornamental and specimen tree, best known for its striking deep purple foliage. It makes an impressive focal point in larger gardens, lawns and open spaces. The large, five-lobed leaves emerge and remain deep purplish-crimson throughout the summer, providing strong colour and contrast against green-leaved plants. Small reddish-orange flowers appear in spring on the bare branches, followed by the characteristic winged maple fruits. A mature tree can reach approximately 8–12 metres in height, with a broad spread of over 8 metres, so it is best suited to larger gardens, parks, lawns and open landscape planting where it has plenty of room to develop. With its bold foliage and impressive size, ‘Crimson King’ is particularly effective as a specimen tree or feature tree, where its dark foliage can provide a strong focal point and contrast within a planting scheme.
