Description The Chinese Art-Deco rugs were predominantly produced in the 1920s and early 1930s. Traditional Chinese motifs (peonies, dragons, clouds, lotus flowers) were combined with the angular, often asymmetric layouts made popular in the western Art-Deco movement. Layouts often featured expansive 'negative space' to allow the striking colors and isolated motifs to command attention. Two manufacturers dominated this era: American Walter Nichols, who embraced vibrant jewel tones made possible by chrome-based dyes, and Fette-Li, a workshop known softer pastel palettes and delicate botanical motifs. This lively and dynamic rug-making period was short-lived; the market crash diminished western demand for carpets and by the mid 1940s, most Chinese carpet manufacturers serving the West closed. We recommend using rug pads to extend the life of all Passerine rugs. Add a custom-sized rug pad to your order using order add-on the drop down above.
