The Blackwing Volume 458 box of pencils is a tribute to birding. Each pencil in the set wears a gradient finish inspired by one of four North American birds: the Clark's Grebe, Mallard, Green Jay, and Black Rail. Genuinely lovely to look at, and a nice reminder that there's more going on outside the window than we usually notice. The number 458 isn't random: it's the estimated number of migratory bird species that pass through the US and Canada each year, stamped in black foil on every pencil. We're suckers for a detail like that. Each box holds twelve pencils: three of each of the four designs, so you get the full set without having to choose a favourite.
