Virgilii Maronis Opera, ad fidem editionis Heynianæ plerumque exhibita. The text follows principally the celebrated recension of Christian Gottlob Heyne (1729-1812), one of the foremost classical scholars of the eighteenth century, whose critical editions of Virgil were highly influential. Printed entirely in Latin, the volume brings together Virgil's great surviving works, including the pastoral Eclogues (Bucolica), Georgics and the Aeneid, cornerstones of classical literature and among the most influential texts of Western civilisation. The title page carries an attractive engraved vignette of the poet and records an unusually extensive group of London booksellers and publishers — J. Rodwell; J. Walker & Co.; J. Cuthell; Law & Whittaker; Baldwin, Cradock & Joy; J. Booker; J. Robinson; and J. Martin — with printing by S. Hamilton, London, 1815. The short Latin preface specifically discusses Heyne's standing as an interpreter of Virgil and explains the preparation of this compact edition. An early handwritten ownership inscription dated 1829 appears on the front blank, giving the book an appealing documented nineteenth-century history only fourteen years after publication. The volume remains in a handsome period half-leather binding, with brown leather spine and corners over marbled paper-covered boards. The spine is decorated in gilt with ruled compartments, ornamental gilt devices and the title "VIRGILIUS", while the marbled boards display the wonderfully aged surface expected of a book now more than 210 years old.
