The centerpiece is a substantial polished (both sides) malachite slab displaying the stone's extraordinary natural banding in layer upon layer of rich emerald, forest, jade and near-black green. Every sweep, concentric marking and variation within the stone was created by nature, making this piece completely unique. I set the malachite into hand-sculpted proprietary material, creating an irregular architectural surround that follows and exaggerates the organic contours of the gemstone. The sculpted surface was textured and finished in metallic gold over a dark black base, allowing glimpses of the underlying darkness to create depth and contrast rather than producing a uniformly polished metallic surface. The intentionally irregular edges and textural variations are part of the handmade character of the piece. The pendant portion measures approximately 6" high x 4" wide and is suspended from a substantial vintage gold-tone chain with an approximately 8" drop on each side. The necklace will accommodate approximately an 18–19" neck. This is not a discreet piece of jewelry. It is an oversized work of wearable sculpture built around one of nature's most unmistakable gemstones—dramatic, sophisticated and intended to occupy space.
