ACSA at Carrick Hill | En Plein Air Painting with Melanie Brown

Lecturer: Melanie Brown Sun 11 Oct 10:00am – 3:00pm Level– Intermediate to advanced Age – 18+ Join highly accomplished artist and lecturer Melanie Brown for a day of plein air painting at the historic grounds of Carrick Hill on Kaurna Land. Enjoy a relaxed, supportive creative environment as you explore the art of plein air painting, surrounded by lush gardens and historic architecture. This immersive workshop will guide you through on-site techniques to create your unique landscape in response to the surroundings, while also allowing time to explore the grounds with like-minded peers interested in painting from nature. Suitable for intermediate to advanced levels. Material List: Oil Paints (please bring your own set. Suggested colours below) Cadmium red Alizarin crimson Cadmium yellow Lemon yellow Ultramarine blue Pthalo blue Burnt Sienna Yellow ochre Ivory black Titanium white Brushes: Flat or Bright stiff synthetic bristle brushes sizes 2, 4, 6, 8. * At least one Filbert stiff synthetic bristle brush in a size 4 or 6. * (An approximation of these brush sizes will be acceptable.) Oil Painting Medium(s): Odourless solvent 500 mL (Gamsol or Langridge Solvent 75 recommended). Supports: 2 sheets A5 oil sketch/canvas paper 1 canvas board 14×18 inch Other: Blue tape Bulldog clips A3 disposable palette.* A small-medium palette knife. * 2 small-medium glass jars with lids. * HB graphite pencil. Paper towel and/or soft t-shirt or cotton rags* An apron or please wear clothes that can forgive the odd paint mark here and there. Additional items: Please bring a hat, sunscreen, and protective clothing for all painting-friendly weather conditions. Sunglasses for createing a monochomatic study Standard Chairs and easels will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their own travel easel and folding chair as a lighter weight option. This will allow for more flexibility in subject matter. Water bottle and a packed lunch Melanie Brown completed a Bachelor of Visual Art (Honours) in 2008 at Adelaide Central School of Art, having been awarded several scholarships and the Alumni Award. She has won awards including the Clifton’s Art Prize in 2008, the Loreto Star Portrait Prize in 2013, the 2024 Finalist in the Kennedy Art Prize and the People’s Choice Award for the Kennedy Art Prize in 2015. Melanie has an extensive exhibition history in addition to lecturing at Adelaide Central School of Art.
