This pendant is named after Chaos - not disorder, but the Greek primordial void from which all things emerged. The formless, boundless state before the world had shape or name. The stone at its center is an authentic ancient maskette carved from limestone, part of a group of small masks associated with Mediterranean folk, devotional, and apotropaic traditions of the medieval to early modern periods. But this one resists easy reading - circular and oval hollows carved across its surface, dark mineral accretions pooling between them, the stone itself shaped by time as much as by hand. A face suggested rather than declared. Such objects were carried and worn as personal protective pieces across Southern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, their meaning held between the maker and the stone. Sourced from a private collection, acquired on the art market in the late 20th century. Set in 925 sterling silver plated with black ruthenium, with a natural trillion-cut amethyst - violet and sharp, a stone long associated with the threshold between the visible and invisible world.
