The family behind Champagne Henri Giraud traces its viticultural roots to 1625 in Aÿ, meaning they were vineyard owners and grape growers centuries before many famous Champagne houses existed. However, they were not operating a Champagne house in the modern commercial sense back then. Henri Giraud is often described as the oldest Champagne house still controlled by the founding family lineage. Argonne is a fusion between the vine and the forest, of these two great historical terroirs in Champagne the grapes from Aÿ and the oak barrels from the nearby Argonne forest, this cuvee is fermented and aged in new, tight-grained, oak barrels from the nearby Argonne forest. The 2015 Argonne opens with an intense, layered nose of white peach, poached pear, Meyer lemon, dried orange peel, brioche, honeyed pastry, marzipan, crème brûlée, and toasted oak, reflecting its élevage in new barrels from the Argonne Forest. On the palate it is broad, powerful, and creamy, yet driven by vibrant acidity and chalky minerality. Flavors of citrus confit, spiced orchard fruit, salted caramel, toasted hazelnut, and subtle smoke unfold through an exceptionally long finish marked by saline freshness and oak-integrated complexity.
