Streepies
Years ago, I used to surf at the Ledge in Kommetjie. One day, two friends and I decided to trim back the kelp so we could surf during low tide. Armed with kitchen knives, we spent our days perfecting our little "kelp garden." However, it wasn't long before word got out, and about 60 surfers showed up. Suddenly, there were no waves to catch, and the kelp grew back stronger than ever. This experience in the depths of the ocean deepened my respect for these underwater forests. Over time, I began free-diving more, especially after watching "My Octopus Teacher." The film reminded many of us locals that there is an incredible wilderness just below the surface. The photo I took at Millers Point in 2020 was during one of those explorations. This painting celebrates the resilience and quiet grandeur of the kelp forests, as well as the life, color, and movement they hold, magnified beneath the water's surface.
