2006 Gibson Custom Shop TOM MURPHY AGED 1959 Les Paul Standard 59 Reissue R9 Dark Burst Historic! Here is a stunning older Gibson Custom Shop Tom Murphy-aged 1959 Les Paul Reissue in a beautiful Dark Burst finish. To be clear, this is well before the Murphy Lab era, meaning this guitar was personally aged entirely by Tom Murphy by hand, making it a far more individual and collectible instrument compared to modern production-aged examples. This one dates to 2006, which many players and collectors consider a particularly strong period for these Murphy-aged Historics. This example has also received some excellent period-correct upgrades, most notably a set of Tom Holmes humbucker pickups, which are among the most respected aftermarket PAF-style pickups ever made. It also features a bone nut, along with some upgraded plastics that are more historically accurate than the stock 2006 parts. The top on this guitar is especially convincing and authentic-looking. While it’s not an over-the-top flame top, it has the kind of subtle vintage-style figuring that many collectors actually prefer — with beautiful movement, flecks, mineral streaking, and natural-looking flame throughout. Even the mahogany neck has attractive figuring on the back, adding to the overall high-end feel. As expected from this era, the neck profile is on the chunkier side and feels fantastic in hand, measuring approximately 0.93” at the 1st fret and 1.04” at the 12th fret. This one plays easy and resonant, and with the Tom Holmes pickups installed, it delivers an exceptionally rich and authentic PAF-style tone with excellent clarity, warmth, and sustain. Condition appears to be at least very good plus. While the guitar has clearly been played some over the years, the majority of the visible wear and aging was intentionally done by Tom Murphy himself as part of the original aging process. It comes complete with the original hardshell case, a handwritten letter from Tom Murphy confirming the guitar is in his records (in place of the COA), and the additional paperwork shown. At 9.0 lbs, it has a very solid and substantial feel.
