Photography Workshop Overview This is where camera skills meet the current. Designed for photographers who have a foundation to build on, Fly Gyde’s full-day Photography Workshop puts you in the raft for a six-hour float down one of Washington’s stunning rivers; waters like the Hoh, Queets, Clearwater, or Quinault, deep in the remote reaches of the Olympic National Park and Rain Forest. Floating the river opens up a perspective that simply can’t be found anywhere else: a view of the land only seen from the water, with access to the untouched wilderness that surrounds it. Along the way, you may encounter majestic bald eagles working the river corridor, Roosevelt Elk crossing the shallows to reach a quiet meadow, river otters, and the sweeping old-growth landscape that makes the Olympic Peninsula one of the most visually stunning places on Earth. But the heart of this workshop is the angler. You’ll learn to read a cast in real time, anticipating where the rod tip is loading, where the fly is in the air, and when the loop and water spray are at their most dramatic, so you’re never a beat behind the shot. We’ll cover the angles that tell a story: over-the-shoulder perspectives that place the viewer right in the action, wide sequences that frame the angler against the river and forest, and low-angle or near-water techniques that bring out the raw energy of a Spey cast. Lael, a professional photographer himself, will walk you through what guides, anglers, and fly fishing brands are actually looking for when they hire a photographer, the images that end up in catalogs, social campaigns, and editorial spreads, so you leave not just a better shooter, but one who understands the visual language of this sport. Whether you’re looking to build a portfolio, shoot for brands, or simply capture your own days on the water at a professional level, this workshop will change how you see the river. What to Bring: Come prepared for a full day on the water. Bring your camera body, and as many lenses as you have access to, a variety of focal lengths will serve you well throughout the float. Wide and standard primes like a 24mm or 35mm are great for environmental and landscape shots, an 85mm works beautifully for portrait-style angler images, and a 70–200mm gives you the reach to capture action, and the wildlife, without crowding the cast. If you own a GoPro, DJI Osmo, or any other action or stabilized camera, bring it along. These devices open up creative possibilities on the water that a traditional camera body simply can’t achieve, and we’ll put them to use. Waders and a rain jacket are essential; this is the Pacific Northwest, and the river is part of the experience. If you do not have these, we do offer them for rent for a nominal fee.
