Vintage Wooden Mortar, Hand Turned Pedestal Rings, Kitchen Collectible Tools, Indigenous Island Native Hardwood, Home Decor, (Discontinued) Vintage: 1930's - 1940's (could be older) Made in: Puerto Rico Details: A wonderful old mortar, hand turned, with a lovely pedestal featuring hand turned rings, gives it a very unique shape. This piece reflects the rustic, traditional artistry of island's craftsmen including a hand-applied design that unfortunately, is mostly lost, the larger pieces have fallen off with years of use. (Were they supposed to be teeth? Stalactites and stalagmites?). The patina however, is absolutely wonderful, the wood's rich pattern changes from light to dark along the grain. There is lots of patina on this one, stains, visible wear, scratches, and the once shiny glaze, now only partially visible. The inside has beautiful tonality as well, but shows years of use, this piece was likely passed down for generations. Direct from the island of Puerto Rico, it is marked "Borincan" on the bottom, a term used to describe something from Borinquen, the original Taíno name for the island of Puerto Rico. How to Use: A great gift for your favorite home chef or mortar collector! Not merely for utilitarian kitchen use, mortars can be turned into objects of art to showcase their patina. We've seen them with a glass w/water inserted to keep herbs fresh on the counter, holding pens/pencils, etc. It will hold a myriad of small objects depending on which room it's displayed in.
