The Denier Tournois Minted during the turbulent reign of Philip IV of France (1285 – 1314), the Denier Tournios was one of the most recognized coins of the Western world. It was struck in the royal city of Tours, and its legend has both the king’s name and the name of Tours around the central images of the Cross Pattee and Castle surmounted by the Cross. The Cross Patee – with its flared arms – is associated with divine guardianship and the reach of God’s power. To the commoners, merchants, traders and nobility the Denier Tournios was a very tangible sign of religious devotion in a chaotic world. It was in fact this small silver coin that linked markets, monasteries and castles across the realm.
