Grade 4 4LS - Living Systems Curricular Highlights Guiding Question: In what ways do the structures of organisms support survival? Grade: 4 Categories: Living Systems, Scientific Methods Description: Students investigate how the external structures of plants are related to their functions. They examine a variety of living plants, roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds using hand lenses or microscopes. Students compare structures such as shallow and deep roots, woody and flexible stems, thick and thin leaves, waxy and fuzzy leaf surfaces, colourful flowers, and fleshy fruits. They use their observations to explain how these structures help plants obtain resources, conserve water, remain supported, reproduce, respond to their environment, and survive. Students record observations and explanations in an observation journal. At the end of the lesson, each student examines a kokedama, identifies its plant structures, records care requirements, and receives the kokedama to take home.
