c. 1750 – T. C. Lotter – Hispania
Title: “Hispania ex Archetypo Roderici Mendez Sylvae…” Description: Very decorative map of the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) showing the historical kingdoms and regions of Hispania. The map covers the entire peninsula including all major territorial divisions: Gallaecia, Asturias, León, Castilla Vetus, Castilla Nueva, Aragonia, Catalonia, Valencia, Granada, Andalusia, and Portugal. Inset maps show the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera) and the North African coast. Based on the cartographic work of Rodrigo Méndez Silva. The upper right corner features an ornate baroque cartouche with allegorical figures and cherubs framing the title, a hallmark of mid-18th-century German cartographic design. Each historical region is outlined and hand-colored in soft pastels—greens, pinks, and yellows—distinguishing the various kingdoms. The map comes from the atlas „Atlas Géographique de cent et huit cartes générales et spéciales / par les géographes Tobie Conrad Lotter, Matthieu Seutter, et Jan-Michel Probst a Augsburg et par les Heritiers de Homan …″ engraved by Georg Friedrich Lotter, published in Nurnberg, circa 1750. Cartographer/Publisher: Tobias Conrad Lotter ( 1717 – 1777 ) Sheet size: 64,7 x 54,2 cm Date: circa 1750–1770 Technique: copper engraving Condition: Good condition with age-appropriate toning. Watermarked paper. Attractive hand coloring. Centerfold visible from atlas binding. Minor paper toning consistent with 18th-century provenance.
