Witnessing: Louise Silk: A Patchwork Life

By Louise Silk and Eric Lidji 47 pages : illustrations ; 19 x 27 cm “Louise Silk: A Patchwork Life” was an exhibit by the Rauh Jewish Archives at the Heinz History Center on view at the Barensfield Gallery from September 1, 2024 through May 26, 2025. It told the story of Louise Silk’s five-decade quilting career through her connections to community, art, feminism, and renewal. Personal and specific, it also became the repository for larger concepts of folk history, cultural reflection, and personal identification. The centerpiece of the exhibit was the Witness Quilt, a collection of folk-wisdoms hand-stitched onto personally significant scraps of fabric collected from visitors during the run of the exhibit and eventually dismantled and given away piece by piece. The exhibit also included an active calendar of programs. To honor Louise’s believe in process over product, this catalog chronicles the pathway behind the creation of the exhibit and its central work “The Witness Quilt.” It is compiled entirely through documentary material created between 2000 and 2025.
