This DB28* Titanium marked the inception of the DB28 line as a whole, paving the way for a future of experimentation. In comparison, this example of the DB28 is a surprisingly pared-back, pure incarnation of their vision, exploring their openworked aesthetic and experimenting with the futuristic touches found throughout. In 2011, De Bethune was awarded the Aiguille d’Or at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) - a commendation that is awarded for the best overall watch in all categories - for the DB28. This watch is an iteration of very same model that won them the award, and marks the inception of the series as a whole, introducing De Bethune's distinct aesthetic to a wider audience. The independent watchmaker is best known for decidedly contemporary design innovations, which firmly push the boundaries of 21st century horology. In its quest, De Bethune continues to conduct research and development within the manufacture’s laboratory, embracing materials new to the watch industry. The subsequent editions of the DB28 are an excellent example of this, with forays into coloured titanium and lesser-used materials now part of their signature charm. The DB28 displays a titanium bridge on the dial in De Bethune’s signature ‘triangle’ form, finished using traditional Cotes de Genève techniques. The skeletonised hands offer a modern interpretation of Breguet styling, creating depth and preserving legibility while overall furthering the futuristic aesthetics of the watch. This is complemented by the blued outer chapter ring, with circular indices that give the dial further texture. To complete the dial, a polished, spherical, moon-phase display can be found below at 6 o'clock, created out of palladium and flame-blued steel. The moonphase is intended to be accurate to 122 years. The manually-wound DB 2115 calibre movement not only displays a very high level of finishing, with hand-decorated components, but is also technologically impressive - representing De Bethune’s unique combination of cutting-edge precision and 18th century tradition. The 299 components show excellent hand-finishing, with concentric graining and sharp, polished-bevels. With self-regulating twin barrels seen on the dial-side of the watch, a power-reserve of 144 hours (6 days) is achieved, shown by the power-reserve indicator on the reverse of the watch. By way of protection, the DB 2115 calibre also boasts a triple-parachute shock-absorbing system; unique to De Bethune calibres. The bridge of the triple parachute is secured by a spring-based system, protecting the heart of the movement. The various architectural elements are connected by three jewels, thereby absorbing shocks and ensuring precise re-positioning of the bridge after displacement. Sized at a contemporary 42.6 mm in diameter, the distinctive drum-shaped case of the DB28 is made from titanium, a material that makes the watch remarkably light, despite its size. The manufacture's articulated, hollowed lugs are spring-loaded, neatly forming around the wrist. The entire watch is given this same high-polish finish, while the screw-down crown is located at the 12 o’clock position.
