Deogen - The Graves and Ghosts of Yore CD

Initially released in 2020, Deogen explored territory that felt both nostalgic and novel at the same time. While The Endless Black Shadows of Abyss is a very raw specimen of black metal, its emphasis on epic melodicism and atmosphere stood apart during a period when raw black metal was beginning to shy away from those elements. The riffs are plentiful and commanding, the drums are driving, dynamic, and relentless, and the vocals shift between sharp rasps and bewitching low-register incantations. Subtle yet effective symphonic elements provide a distinctive backbone throughout. One of the album’s most compelling strengths lies in its production, which strikes a rare balance between the crude, coarse qualities that define raw black metal and the cleaner synth tones and melodic undercurrents that are occasionally allowed to take the forefront. This balance gives the album a unique sound for its time. Where many contemporaries drowned their ideas in walls of feedback, reducing songs to lingering tonal shifts, Deogen leaned into black metal’s inherent drama and the melancholy essential to a truly memorable experience in the genre. Listening today, the album feels timeless—a sincere standout release. Though shorter in duration, the understated superiority of The Endless Black Shadows of Abyss is undeniable. By clashing raw riffing with ariose symphonic elements, Deogen crafted a perennial example of the genre’s potential—one not to be missed a second time.
