A particularly striking brutalist pendant by Mies De Wilde, stylistically likely dating from the 1970s. The long, narrow silver plate features a stylized man and woman in pronounced relief. The highly polished figures stand out sharply against the dark, oxidized background, giving the design an almost architectural appearance. Mies De Wilde (1932–2009) was an important Belgian silversmith and one of the innovators of Belgian jewellery design from the 1950s onwards. His work was exhibited at Expo 58, among other events, and several of his pieces are now in the collection of DIVA in Antwerp. The reverse is also part of the design. It features a dark oxidized, linear motif that most closely resembles a stylized plant or tree growing upwards from a pointed base. The pendant is signed MDW and also bears the A925 mark and Mies De Wilde's tonneau-shaped maker's mark. The modern chain is not originally by Mies De Wilde, but was carefully selected to complement the pendant. It is a sterling silver chain by the Italian brand Zancan, with a polished anchor link and a black rhodium finish. The dark colour beautifully complements the oxidized parts of the pendant and enhances its brutalist character. The pendant is in good vintage condition. There are signs of previous use on the bail, but it remains strong and shows no worrying thinning. Otherwise, there are normal superficial signs of wear consistent with its age.
