This is a Paint Juicy night in Ballina, so expect big sound, a room that gets braver with every chorus, and a lot of people discovering they can hold a note after all. Summer officially starts on 1 December, and there are worse ways to welcome it than a paintbrush in one hand and a drink in the other. Lotti Rem sings live for the whole session, which is the difference between a singalong and a playlist somebody left running. Your host talks you through every brushstroke on the mic, so nobody is left staring at a half finished tail feather wondering where it all went wrong. The breaks between layers are built in on purpose, giving you time to grab another drink, take the photo and be ready when the next big one lands. The set opens in the 70s, all disco and flares, then swings through the 80s once the room has stopped pretending it is shy. Groups of mates, mums and daughters, workmates who have been promising a night out since winter, they all end up belting the same chorus by the third hour. A 6pm start means brushes are down around 9pm, so you can stay on at the pub or have the canvas home before the week gets away from you. An easy drive from Lennox Head, Alstonville, Wollongbar and Lismore, and a short trip down the coast from Byron Bay. Can't make the Tuesday? Tonight's Artwork The Red Peacock A proud peacock in cobalt and midnight blue, standing side on against a bold red sky, with a long train of green and gold feathers sweeping right across the canvas and a bright yellow eye at the tip of each one. The red goes on first in big, flat strokes, the bird comes next, and the feathers are the finale, loose flicks of the brush with the eyes dotted in last. It looks like a showstopper and paints like a treat, which is why it is always the canvas people photograph first. Lotti Rem, live on the mic for the full session, working through the 70s and 80s while you paint. A real voice in the room, not a speaker in the corner. What are we painting? The Red Peacock, a cobalt blue peacock standing side on against a red sky, with green and gold tail feathers sweeping across the canvas. Want the colours shifted to suit your lounge room? Say so on the night and we will help you change them, no extra charge. Do I have to sing? Nobody is checking. You will anyway. There are call and response moments and at least three songs you forgot you knew every word to. What time does it finish? Painting starts at 6pm and runs three hours, so brushes are down around 9pm. Do I need painting experience? None at all. Every step is guided from blank canvas to finished piece, and the peacock is built from bold blocks of colour and quick feather strokes rather than fiddly detail, so it is far kinder than it looks. Is this good for a hens or birthday group? Ideal. Hens parties and birthdays are the two occasions we see most. We seat you with other friendly humans so you are part of it from the first song. Can groups who book separately sit together? Yes. Can we book the whole room instead? Yes. Private sessions are $700 AUD flat for the first 10 guests and $65 per additional guest, with a minimum of 10 paid guests.
