Lazio Street Scene

I am always on the lookout for little street scenes like this that give me the opportunity to try and capture the glow of the afternoon sunlight contrasted with the deep shadows from the tall, rustic buildings. So when I came across this scene on holiday recently, in the beautiful region of Lazio in southern Italy, I knew immediately that it would make an excellent painting. It’s a busy little subject that uses a whole variety of watercolour techniques and methods, so take your time, particularly with the figures, and enjoy seeing it slowly emerge from a blank piece of paper.
