Monumental F. & C. Osler Satin Cut Crystal Plafonnier with Gilt Bronze Gallery and Classical Festoon Decoration
Monumental F. & C. Osler Satin Cut Crystal Plafonnier with Gilt Bronze Gallery and Classical Festoon Decoration IG221831 An exceptional grand-scale plafonnier by F. & C. Osler, retaining its original gilt bronze gallery with finely cast classical decoration. Acquired as part of a significant collection of approximately 200 pieces drawn directly from the archive of W. Sitch & Co., London. At over half a metre in diameter, this is a hall-scale fitting of genuine architectural presence. The Glass The bowl is executed in thick hand-cut crystal with a high-gloss polished exterior and satin-finished interior — a technically demanding treatment distinctive of F. & C. Osler's finest architectural production. The exterior is worked with a bold radiating fan-cut and overlapping petal relief, each lobe deeply and precisely defined, graduating from rim to base. When illuminated, the satin interior produces a warm even glow while the polished exterior relief reads with full sculptural clarity. Unlit, the depth of the cutting and the quality of the crystal are immediately apparent. This is hand-cut crystal to a standard that no longer exists in production. The Frame The original gilt bronze gallery is pierced with arched slot apertures and punctuated by raised floral rosette medallions. Between the rosettes hang individually cast swag festoons of pointed leaf forms, tied at each end with ribbon bow mounts — classical eighteenth-century ornament executed with the precision expected of serious architectural metalwork. The fitting suspends from an original decorative ceiling plate via cast brass link chains. Provenance Founded in 1776 and trading from Soho for over two centuries, W.
