Rare Sculptural Lounge Armchairs to Prof. Kaesz Gyula, Hungary, c. 1940–42 – Documented

This pair of armchairs is identified and documented based on interior designs by Kaesz Gyula from circa 1940–42, supported by an original hand-drawn plan. The form is low and of medium club size, with a distinctly lounge-oriented character. The notably reclined backrest reflects the comfort-driven design approach of the period. The construction has undergone a complete restoration. The seat springs have been traditionally re-tied, with the original webbing preserved. A significant portion of the original African stuffing has been retained and carefully supplemented, ensuring authentic seating comfort and proper structural support. The removable back cushion is a key feature, both functionally and visually, softening the otherwise solid, sculptural mass of the chair. The upholstery is executed in a premium, high-weight, wool-based Minotti tapestry textile, featuring a rich, boucle-like texture. Its nuanced composition of rust, ochre, and burnt orange tones is harmoniously paired with the velvet back cushions, emphasizing the chair’s sculptural presence. Exceptionally comfortable, this is a rare, documented, collector-quality piece.
