A Heritage of Nearly 2,000 Years The custom of wearing five-colored threads during the Dragon Boat Festival can be traced back to Han-era traditions. The classic text Fengsu Tongyi records the practice of tying five-colored silk to the arm on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month as a way to ward off misfortune, illness, and harmful spirits. Later festival writings also refer to these threads as changming lü, or “longevity threads,” reflecting wishes for health, protection, and long life.
