Crocus Jeanne D'Arc (Crocus vernus) Welcome the first breath of spring with Crocus Jeanne D'Arc, a timeless Dutch crocus variety celebrated for its pristine white blooms and elegant simplicity. Part of the large flowering Crocus vernus group, Jeanne D'Arc produces generous, cup shaped flowers of pure white, subtly brushed with soft lilac at the base and illuminated by vivid orange stamens. Emerging in late winter when gardens are at their quietest, these graceful blooms brighten any landscape. Each pack contains premium Crocus Jeanne D'Arc corms, sourced for reliable flowering and strong garden performance. The clean white blooms appear alongside slender, grass like foliage, creating an elegant early season display. Flowers open wide in sunshine, revealing delicate lilac veining and bright stamens, and close neatly at dusk or in overcast conditions. An outstanding naturaliser, Jeanne D'Arc returns with increasing abundance each season, making it ideal for borders, lawns, rockeries, containers, and beneath deciduous trees. Product Highlights • Bulb count: 4 corms per pack • Flower colour: Pure white with soft lilac base and orange stamens • Plant height: 10 to 15 cm • Bloom time: July to August (late winter to early spring) • Naturalising: Yes • Sun requirements: Full sun to light shade • Soil type: Well drained, enriched with organic matter • Frost tolerance: Hardy to minus 15 degrees Celsius Planting Instructions Plant Crocus Jeanne D'Arc corms in autumn, from March onwards once the ground has cooled, through to May. Select a location in full sun to light shade, ideally beneath deciduous trees where the corms will benefit from winter sunlight. Well drained soil is essential. Amend heavy clay soils with coarse sand, compost, or grit to improve drainage. Plant each corm approximately 10 cm deep and 7 to 10 cm apart, with the pointed end facing upward. In warmer climates, plant slightly deeper to protect corms from heat fluctuations. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the corms into position and apply a light mulch layer. A dressing of blood and bone or a balanced bulb fertiliser at planting time supports healthy establishment and vigorous flowering. Watering and Care Crocus Jeanne D'Arc is remarkably low maintenance once established. Water sparingly during the growing season, supplementing only if rainfall is scarce. Avoid overwatering, as excess moisture can cause corm rot, particularly in heavier soils. After blooming, allow the foliage to die back naturally over four to six weeks. This period is critical for the corms to recharge and produce strong blooms the following season. For crocuses planted in lawns, delay mowing until the foliage has completely yellowed. In wet summer climates, consider lifting and storing dormant corms to prevent rot. Pruning Advice No pruning is necessary for crocuses. Spent flowers can be tidied away, but the foliage must remain in place until it has died back naturally. Removing green leaves prematurely deprives the corm of energy and compromises the next season's display. To maintain vigour, lift and divide established clumps every three to five years during the dormant period in late summer. Gently separate offsets from the mother corm and replant immediately, or store in a breathable bag in a cool, dry location until planting time. Climate Zone Guide Cool and Alpine (ACT, VIC Highlands, NSW Tablelands, TAS): Ideal conditions. Consistent winter cold ensures vigorous flowering, and Jeanne D'Arc naturalises effortlessly in these regions, producing larger clumps with each passing year. Temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, coastal NSW): Excellent results with reliable annual blooms. Plant in well drained soil and avoid irrigating over dormant corms during summer to reduce the risk of rot. Subtropical (Brisbane, coastal QLD): Can be grown with pre-chilling. Refrigerate corms for six weeks before planting in the coolest, most sheltered part of the garden. Results may vary, and treating corms as annuals with fresh planting each year is a practical approach. Tropical and Arid (Darwin, Far North QLD): Not recommended. Crocuses require an extended cold dormancy period that tropical climates cannot naturally provide. Important Warnings Crocus corms and foliage are harmful if ingested, potentially causing stomach upset, nausea, and vomiting in humans, dogs, cats, and livestock. Keep corms stored safely away from children and pets. Wear gloves when handling corms if you have sensitive skin, as contact may cause mild irritation in some individuals. Do not plant near vegetable gardens where accidental ingestion is a risk. If ingestion occurs, seek medical or veterinary advice immediately.
