Antique Victorian Carved Tortoiseshell Amphora Earrings
This pair of antique Victorian era carved tortoiseshell amphora earrings represents an absolutely exceptional find- they have a nearly identical "twin" pair in the Costume Institute collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art! Furthermore, the Met Museum pair was copied for well over a decade as part of their in-house costume jewelry line. That makes these finely carved, archeological revival style earrings not only beautiful, but absolutely iconic. Fitted with unmarked, but tested 10k gold hooks, they are, truly, a pair of earrings worthy of a museum collection. Earrings are in very good condition. There is a very small amount of chipping/damage to the back of one amphora, near the bottom, as shown in photos, but this is not seen when they are worn. Earrings measure 1.75" from top tortoiseshell ring to the bottom of the amphora. PLEASE NOTE: These earrings are made of real tortoiseshell, a material that is illegal to sell unless it is over 100 years old. These earrings date to the late 1800s and have not been altered after 1977, both in my professional opinion and that of an independent, professional authenticator, and as such, are exempt from the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) ban of 1977 and can be legally sold. I am happy to furnish written documentation stating the age of these earrings. HOWEVER, I cannot sell these earrings internationally and can only ship within the USA.
