Carboweld 11 - Weldable Inorganic Zinc Primer

Carboweld 11 is a self-curing, inorganic zinc silicate primer engineered as a weldable pre-construction shop primer for steel fabrication. This product provides reliable corrosion protection during the construction phase of a project while allowing fabricators to weld and cut coated steel at production-line speeds, making it ideal for shipyards, structural steel shops, and other industrial fabrication environments. Here are some key features: Weldability: Welds made over Carboweld 11 coated steel are equal in every respect to welds made to uncoated steel. The coating supports submerged arc, flux core, short arc, and MIG processes at automatic welding speeds up to 48″ per minute, with weld spatter that does not adhere to or damage the surrounding film. Fast Cure: Carboweld 11 dries to touch and to handle in 3 to 5 minutes at typical shop temperatures, allowing coated plate to be moved, stacked, and processed almost immediately after spraying with minimal disruption to fabrication workflow. Certified Pre-Construction Primer: Carboweld 11 is certified as a pre-construction primer for Lloyd’s Register constructions, making it well suited for shipbuilding, offshore/marine, structural steel, and other heavy-fabrication industries that require third-party-approved shop primers. Application: The product is applied by conventional or airless spray for optimal coverage. Thinning is not normally required, but up to 25.6 oz/gal of Thinner #21 may be used in cool weather (below 40°F) or Thinner #33 in hot or windy conditions. Brush application is permitted for touch-up of areas less than one square foot. DO NOT APPLY BY ROLLER. Power-mix the base, then sift the zinc filler slowly into the base under continuous agitation, mix until lump-free, and pour through a 30-mesh screen. Do not mix partial kits. Keep under mild agitation during application. Pot life is 48 hours at 75°F. Carboweld 11 protects steel during the construction phase without slowing the fabricator, helping shops maintain high welding throughput while still delivering a corrosion-resistant, topcoat-ready surface.
