Altius CF-1 Carbon Fiber LED Spreader Light
The Altius Spreader Light is part of a collection of new unique designs that we have been working on since 2019. With corrosion the biggest issue we see in the marine lighting market it was time for an upgrade. The industry standard for a light housing is cast aluminum. Cast aluminum does have benefits. It is cheap, easy to mold, lightweight, and it has decent thermal properties (less than 200 w/m K). However, cast aluminum has no place in a marine corrosive environment. Then you add in stainless steel fasteners and mounting brackets and you are asking for failure. Yes, you can extend the life of a cast aluminum light housing by adding the highest quality coatings and pretreatments plus isolating the dissimilar metals, but ultimately the corrosion will find its way under the coating and eventually cause the light to fail. We knew there had to be a better way. Well, here at Plash we do not like failure. We took out to find a solution. We looked into machining billet aluminum or other higher grade alloys and metals such as titanium, but ultimately that was too costly. We looked into thermal plastics, but their thermal properties are too low. Fiberglass, but it has no thermal properties. Then we stumbled onto carbon fiber. At first it was just like fiberglass with no thermal properties, but then we found a way. Working with an industry leader in the carbon fiber research & development industry we developed the world's first thermally conductive light housing made from entirely carbon fiber. Our high performance forged carbon fiber light housings are high modulus, high thermal conductivity, and low thermal expansion. High modulus is very attractive for applications where high stiffness and light weight are required. High thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion are unique characters superior for a light housing. Carbon fiber having 900 GPa in modulus and 900 w/m K in thermal conductivity is possible. We have proven it. The requirement of thermal management is increased in high-powered LED and Laser lighting. Maintaining a lower temperature extends the life span of the LED's and components. Minimal thermal expansion confirms that the seals and components will stay set as intended extending the life of the light. It is our goal to make the light housing and its components outlast the light source whether that is today's LED's with an average of 50,000 hours, the lasers that are coming into effect now, or the light source of the future. Every light housing is made 100% at our facility in Dickinson, Texas.
